KUALA LUMPUR: The Government can revoke the licences of the three companies that have yet to provide the required WiMAX wireless service throughout the country, Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission had been asked to evaluate the three companies — YTL e-Solutions Bhd, Asiaspace Dotcom Sdn Bhd and REDtone International Bhd — that had not lived up to the terms of the licences issued to them, he said.
“They have to prove by the end of the year that they are able to provide wireless services, especially to Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.
Rais said all companies responsible for providing wireless services must achieve a 25% broadband penetration by the end of this year, and up to 50% by the end of next year.
On whether their licences would be revoked, he said the Government has the right to do so under the licensing terms, but had to first issue warnings to them.
“We have given them warnings to prove why their licences should not be revoked by the end of the year if they do not fulfil their responsibility as required by their licences,” he said.
Four companies were awarded the 2.3GHz spectrum, allowing them to offer wireless broadband services using WiMAX technology, in 2007: Green Packet Bhd, REDtone, YTL e-Solutions and Asiaspace.
So far only Green Packet subsidiary Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd has rolled out its service extensively, while YTL e-Solutions and Asiaspace have had limited rollouts.
Green Packet, YTL e-Solutions and Asiaspace are licensed to offer WiMAX services in the peninsula, while REDtone’s area of operation is Sabah and Sarawak.
WiMAX, which stands for World Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a digital communications system that allows wireless broadband access to the Internet.

Island-hopping with dear Piare & her clan from Peninsular! At first I wanted to bring them to Manukan Island but soon end up to Mamutik Island & Sapi Island.
I tried Parasailing today! One Word: AWESOME!
Completed another task: Snorkeling alone without any dive master to help me at Sapi Island. I managed to reduce my hydrophobic to minimum. I am able to flip around (with life jacket of course) between floating facing the sun & the sea bed. he,he.
Woohoo!
(@ren: so worth the roxy! Her pario color reminds me of the halter bikini!! wargh)
Oh I should be doing a medical check-up today. Oh well, can always go for the check up tomorrow
I celebrate Kaamatan today at Kadazan-Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA)’s Hongkod Koisaan, Penampang. Dang, should have followed my dad, he get to enter the hall with fellow VIP while me stucked outside, under the sun.
I love the unity and the diversity of Sabahan ethnicity. We don’t segregate each other according to race but we stand together as one.
oh, I’m so going to miss the warmth and hospitality of the people here.
Few colleagues and me visited the Valai Rungus as one of our colleague is a Rungus. I told her & her mom that I wanna wear the Rungus dress & they took roughly 20 minutes to cloth me. Yep, fully accessorized. The MC announced me wearing the attire & the tourist flocked to take picture with me. ha,ha. Funny.
More info about the rungus please visit Sabah Tourism and Suku Kaum Rungus website.

I wonder, why do we need to switch off just the light? when other electrical appliances still on? Is that what WWF intend or ?
OK, we definitely can’t still off all the appliances i.e. boiler, aircond in the server room, etc but what about those devices that doesn’t need to be on 24/7 like your notebook. Can you just switch it off for one hour?I definitely switched off my notebook. I was out with mommy & relative having mommy’s birthday dinner at Little Italy. I had my tiramisu dessert in the dark.
Moral of the story: Way to help the Gaia is to reduce your carbon footprint. Calculate your carbon footprint & start acting to it.
Another attempt to shot pointed to the sky. Tell me what you think!
KOTA KINABALU:Sabah residents would be the first to experience high-speed wireless Internet access in east Malaysia with launch of the WiMAX technology by REDtone International Bhd.
REDtone group chief executive officer Zainal Amanshah said the service would be available in most high-density areas of the city on a 2.3 GHz band.
“Customers in east Malaysia can expect to pay up to 40% less for REDtone’s WiMAX compared to traditional leased lines.” he said at the WiMAX soft launch and agreement signing between REDtone and Motorola Electronics Sdn Bhd yesterday. – Bernama
iDa: Oh really? *Skeptical* I will investigate later.
